Bird release

I recently delivered a grave-side service for a man who amongst other interests, was a pigeon fancier. Towards the end of the service I spoke briefly of the historical, calming role of birds as a sign of peace and as a release of the spirit. His friend then released five of the deceased's own birds. As they flew away it was quite a significant moment and obviously had an impact on the family. Have any others experienced similar?
